Virus scan, malware and bots

I am new here. I'm not quite sure what to do quite yet, but I do have a
question as far as virus scanners and malware and bots. What are the
best programs to use for these things? I have in the past purchased
Mcafee, now AOL offers it free. I'm not sure if it's doing it's job. My
computer is really slow (may need more memory too, but just to be sure.)
