Review: Gameloft’s new title, Backstab, brings a truly console quality gaming experience to iPhone for the first time at an unbelievable price.

The player becomes one Henry Blake, a disillusioned, formerly imprisoned roughneck of a sailor who is out for revenge. Having lost his fiancée, Henry’s goal is to get a heaping helping of vengeance, and he’ll take out anyone who comes between him and his ultimate target. BackStab takes place in the 18^th century, and a Caribbean paradise (infested by pirates) makes up Henry’s hunting grounds. It’s a third person action/adventure title that impresses on every level. The 3D environment allows for free movement throughout the island’s various areas, giving gamers the opportunity to immerse themselves in Henry’s world.

Henry’s world, mind you, is a pretty dangerous place. So brushing up on combat skills is job one. The controls are complex—this is combo-based combat, after all. The game’s excellent design helps shorten the learning curve by making the controls fully customizable. It’s an excellent feature, since onscreen buttons are best utilized in a dozen different ways by different gamers. There’s plenty of opportunity to hone those skills, too, because the action in BackStab is non-stop.

It’s simply a fantastic game; it’s difficult to pick apart BackStab. The main campaign is a little on the simple side to finish, but that’s not taking into account the playability gains from exploring the whole island. Plus, there are plenty of side quests for the player who isn’t done with the game after beating it. It won’t appeal to those who don’t like violent games. Not only is there plenty of action, but that action is dramatic and bloody—and with the realistic graphics of this game, the violent action packs a serious punch. But aside from factors which depend upon personal preferences, there’s almost nothing here to criticize.

And if there was, you’d barely notice it with BackStabs visual and audio appeal. It’s not that there are no 3D winners in the App Store already, it’s just that BackStab totally trumps them. The naturalness of the environments is seriously impressive, and the in-game physics support this to make BackStab one of a kind in the mobile game market. The interactions with other characters include voiceovers, and the voice-acting (where so many games fall flat) is professional, believable, and true-to-life.

It’s a game that stands alone, especially considering the fact that it’s only $6.99 in the App Store. You do have to be running an iOS that can handle it on a device with the hardware to support all its bells and whistles, so take a close look at compatibility before going in for the kill.
