SuperSport sign Santos' Gabonamong

SuperSport United signed a third central defender on Wednesday ahead of their crucial away Absa Premiership match against newly promoted Vasco da Gama in Cape Town on Friday evening.

The defending champions, depleted by the departure of Bongani Khumalo to Tottenham Hotspur this week, signed Botswana international Mogogi Gabonamong on a two-year contract after initially agreeing a pre-contract with the utility player which would have allowed him to join the defending champions at the end of June.

The signing of Gabonamong brings to three the number of new central defenders after they had first signed Ajax Cape Town’s 22-year old Mario Booysens on a six-month loan and added 18-year-old tough-tackling Grant Kekana from National First Division side Pretoria TUKS.

“I can confirm that we have reached agreement with Santos for the services of Gabonamong,” revealed United chief operations officer Jose Ferreira.

“We have been a bit thin in defence and Gabobamong brings added stability to our defence.

“If you look at United over the years, our strength has always been in defence. Both Bongani Khumalo and Morgan Gould gave nothing away and they somehow managed to be the foundation from which we launched our attacks.

“But since Khumalo got injured, that combination with Gould was broken up. And when Khumalo recovered, Gould got injured and eventually missed out on an opportunity to represent the country at the Fifa World Cup.

“But I am glad that Gabonamong has signed and, depending on his match fitness after struggling for game time at Santos, coach Gavin Hunt might consider him for selection on Friday against Vasco da Gama.”

Gabonamong becomes the second Botswana international to join United, the first was Dipsey Selolwane who has been a permanent feature in Gavin Hunt’s starting line-up since he joined at the start of the season.
