Woman Who Tried to Mail Puppy Won't Get it Back
The Minneapolis woman who police say tried to mail a puppy to her son in Georgia won't get the dog back.
Authorities denied her request to get the 4-month-old Schnauzer mix
back during an administrative hearing Monday morning at city hall.
Last Tuesday, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS told you about the dog, who was found
sealed inside a package in a downtown Minneapolis post office.
Police say 39-year-old Stacey Champion brought the box to the post
office and told postal workers she wanted to send it to Atlanta. The
box, which had no air holes, food or water, was not discovered until it
was noticed to be moving, once placed in the back of the post office.
Champion was charged with animal cruelty after postal workers opened the package and found the puppy.
At Monday's hearing, Champion claimed she put air holes and water
bottles in the box. She says her son was deprived of his birthday gift.
In the past, postal workers say they've seen chicks mailed under very specific circumstances, but never anything like this.
The Minneapolis Animal Care and Control shelter has cared for the puppy, named Guess, since the incident.
