| Diamond Carat
Diamond merchants and jewelers determine the value of a diamond based on four characteristics nicknamed “The Four C’s.” The 4 C’s refer to a diamond’s color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Each factor is important in influencing the price of a stone, but all things being equal, carat weight is the biggest determinant of a loose stone’s value.
The term carat (not to be confused with karat, which pertains to gold) is derived from the word “carob,” which is a small nut. Carob nuts have the odd property of being extremely uniform. Indeed, almost all carob nuts weigh within a small percentage of one another, making them weighing standards before precision measuring devices were available. In modern terms, a carat weights 200 milligrams, roughly the weight of one carob nut.
In general, the larger the stone in carat weight, the more it is worth. In the diamond and jewelry industries, the prices of loose diamonds are given in terms of price per carat. A diamond’s carat weight can also influence the unit price per carat of the stone. For example, a small 0.20 carat diamond may cost $1,000 per carat meaning that the overall cost of the stone is $200 ($1000 x 0.2ct). On the other hand, a 10 carat diamond, which is much rarer, may cost $10,000 per carat, meaning that a 10 carat stone may be worth upwards of $100,000.
Carat weight can be somewhat deceiving to the untrained eye. Stones that are high in carat weight may actually look smaller than stones that weight fewer carats depending on the way the stones were cut. For example, a diamond that has an emerald cut has a large table, which can make the stone look bigger than it is. Contrast this to a diamond that has a marquis cut, which has a smaller table. The marquis cut stone may appear to be smaller, when in fact it weighs more carats.
Carat weight is a very technical term, which may be hard for people to imagine. When one says that a diamond weighs 0.20 carats and another diamond weighs 10 carats, most people will have no idea about the actual dimensions of the stones. Diamonds that are 0.20 carats are approximately 3.8mm long and diamonds that are 10 carats are approximately 14 mm in size.
Carat weight alone does not determine the total value of a loose diamond, but it is the main contributor to the price. A diamond’s color, clarity, and cut also have a great influence on the price. For example, a small diamond that is flawless cam very well cost more money than a larger diamond that has flaws or is a low grade color. Having said that, however, large diamonds are exceptionally rare in nature, which makes the price difference between small stones and larger ones increase exponentially.
