Bernard Tomic has taken out the first set of his clash with 31st seed Feliciano Lopez 7-6, bringing rapturous applause from a big crowd at Hisense Arena. Tomic broke the left-handed Spaniard in the second game, but lost his own serve when sering for the set leading 5-3. He led throughout the tiebreak, and set up three set pointswith a powerful backhand down the line, which landed centimetres inside the baseline. Lopez served an ace, but netted during the next rally to give the 18-year-old Aussie the set.

Tomic, who said after his straight sets first round win that he needed to hit harder earlier in rallies, has mixed up the pace of his groundstrokes, carefuly placing slice backhands, but slamming his powerful forehand, and on occasion, turning up the power on two-handed backhand pases. His consistency and composure are again rewarding him - Lopez has hit 30 winners to 18, but the youngster has committed nine unforced errors compared to Lopez's 18.

World number one, and tournament favourite, Rafael Nadal, has annihilated American Ryan Sweeting on Rod Laver Arena, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, in just 101 minutes. The Spanish leftie smashed seven aces and 43 winners, and took out 89 points overall to his hapless opponent's 52.

Women's 14th seed Agnieszka Radwanska has defeated Petra Martic of Croatia 6-3, 6-4 on show court two, continuing the flawless record of seeds in not conceding a set so far today. Like many lower ranked players, Martic, the world 140, has plenty of ability - she slammed 37 winners past Radwanska, but she committed many more unforced errors - 37-17, and her first serve was poor, with only 49% forcing a return.

The Spanish left-hander is finding his range in baseline rallies, and broke back thanks to a sizzling backhand winner after a twenty shot rally.

Unhrealded Ukranian Alexander Dolgopolov has continued his charge to prominence with a strong second round win over Germany's Benjamin Becker, 6-3, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 on court seven. Dolgopolov, 23, has risen over sixty places in world rankings in the past year after finally shaking off a string of injuries. Another win or two here and his current rank of 46 will continue to tumble. He also is getting sloser to the more prestigious courts at Melbourne Park with each victory, having played his first round match on the most distant patch of the complex in use - court 21.

Canada's Milos Raonic has upset number 22 seed Michael Llodra of France 7,6, 6-3, 7-6 on show court three. The powerful Canuck slammed 21 aces and 49 winners in his surprisingly easy 138 minute triumph.

Australia's Bernard Tomic is just starting his highly anticipated second round clash with Spanish 31st seed Feliciano Lopez on Hisense Arena. He leads 1-0 after holding his first service game.

The straightforward progress of women's seeds is continuing on day four, with Israel's Shahar Peer downing Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-2 on Margaret Court Arena. This was a tougher encounter than many others however, the tenth seed fighting of seven break points and taking 92 minutes to overcome world number 94-ranked Romanian.

Italy's Flavia Pennetta, the 22nd seed, has defeated Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2, 6-2, on show court two. Pennetta overcame a first serve efficiency of just 49% by virtue of whacking 33 winners to six.

Kim Clijsters has taken the lead in the race to be the most amusing on-court interviewee of the Open following her convincing round two win over Carla Suarez Navarro on Rod Laver Arena.

Speaking to Channel Seven's Todd Woodbridge on court after her victory, a playful Clijsters turned the tables on her interviewer, informing the crowd and the television audience of a text message Woodbridge had sent fellow commentator Rennae Stubbs at the Sydney Intenational tournament last week, in which the former doubles star questioned whether Kim was pregnant.

"She looks grumpy and her boobs are bigger" were Woodbridge's words according to Clijsters, who has famously returned to the circuit and won two US Opens after giving birth to daughter Jada in 2008.

A blushing Woodbridge had no rejoinder but to wrap up the interview with Clijsters and the packed centre court crowd cracking up in laughter.

Clijsters also revealed that she was modelling an Fila outfit based on the design worn by Australian champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley when she won Wimbledon for a second time, as a mum, in 1980.

Belgian third seed Kim Clijsters has ripped through her second round match against Carla Suarez Navarro on Rod Laver Arena, winning 6-1, 6-3 in only 62 minutes. The world number three hit 23 winners to six, eliminating any chance of an upset at the hands of the 64-ranked Spaniard.

Play has begun in perfect, warm conditions, under cloudless skies, with another 40,000-plus crowd a possibility given the prospect of 29 degree temperatures and matches featuring Australians Alicia Molik and Bernard Tomic. The best local hope, sixth seed Samantha Stosur plays at 7pm tonight on centre court against unranked Russian Vera Dushevina.
