Two El Paso high school students among 9 killed in Jua'rez over weekend
Two El Paso high school students were gunned down in Jua'rez this
weekend, officials from the Chihuahua state attorney general's office
said Monday.

The attack occurred after gunmen opened fire Saturday and killed three
students at a used-car dealership at Go'mez Mori'n Boulevard and San
Antonio Street.

The victims were identified as Carlos Mario Gonza'lez Bermudez, 16;
Juan Carlos Echeverri Jr., 15; and César Yalin Miramontes Jiménez, 17.

Authorities said Gonza'lez Bermudez and Echeverri Jr. attended private schools in El Paso.

Gonza'lez Bermudez was a sophomore at Cathedral High School, school officials confirmed Monday.

Juan Carlos Echeverri, father of Echeverri Jr., said in a voice message
that his son was a U.S. citizen. He did not say which school his son
attended in El Paso.

He asked for justice in the death of his son. Authorities said the shooting is under investigation.

Cathedral officials said
members of the school's sophomore class participated in an assembly and prayer service for Gonza'lez Bermudez on Monday morning.

A rosary is planned for Thursday morning for the entire Cathedral student body, administrators said.

In a recent interview, Nick Gonzalez, the principal of Cathedral High
School, spoke about the resilience of his students from Jua'rez and
their families.

About 8 percent of Cathedral's 479 students are classified as international students.

"We're in the middle of this crisis in Jua'rez. And Cathedral opens its
arms and its doors to a number of kids who are in this diaspora,"
Gonzalez said. "I'm in awe of their love of Jua'rez, their anger at the
injustice and their determination to survive this and to return and
rebuild."

The students were killed in one of three triple homicides that took place this weekend in Jua'rez.

A teenager, a woman and a 40-year-old man died in a second attack by
unidentified gunmen elsewhere in Jua'rez, a statement from the
Chihuahua state attorney general's office said.

A third triple homicide at a garage left a 13-year-old boy among the
slain. Another three people were killed in separate shootings.
